David Gassett is a museum anthropologist focusing on the history and current treatment of museum collections of Native American belongings obtained through colonialism. He is particularly interested in ways to expose and address these histories, such as in his master’s thesis where he uncovered the identity and agency of the previously unknown maker of an object at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History. He received his MA in anthropology and museum studies from the George Washington University and his BA (summa cum laude, dept. honors) in anthropology and archaeology from Columbia University. Professionally, he has published in Museum & Society 17, no. 3 (2019) and worked in both education and curatorial roles at various museums, including the American Museum of Natural History, New-York Historical Society, South Street Seaport Museum, and National Museum of Natural History.
