In Focus II: Jan Tschichold and Graphic Design in the 1920s
This
course will be a preparation for the Focus exhibition Jan Tschichold and the New Typography to be shown in spring, 2019.
Drawn from the collection of posters and graphic ephemera assembled by
Tschichold in Weimar Germany (now held in the Museum of Modern Art), the
exhibition aims to provide an overview of the most radical innovations in
modernist graphic design and photography of the period. Students will undertake
research into some famous artist-designers, including El Lissitzky, Laszlo
Moholy-Nagy, Kurt Schwitters, and Jan Tschichold himself, as well as many less
well known figures who made a significant contribution to modern graphic
design. There will also be an opportunity work on interpretation and
complementary digital features of the exhibition. 3 credits.
