The emergence of cloisonné enamel in China remains
mysterious. According to tradition, the technology and style were imported from
the West in the fourteenth century, when China was under Mongol rule. In this
lecture, François Louis examines the evidence and discusses the early appreciation
of cloisonné in light of late medieval jewelry and metalwork traditions.
François Louis is an associate professor at BGC, and author,
most recently, of “The Yuan Synthesis: Material Culture in Yuan China,” in
Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire.”
