Giovanni Acerbis is an Italian master cabinet maker and PhD student at the University of Southern Denmark in the Department of Media, Design, Education and Cognition and the Center for Design and Production History. His research focuses on exploring sustainable consumption and uses of everyday objects. His doctoral project, “The Role of Kitchens: Reaching Sustainability through Materiality” adopts a theoretical framework that combines the ontological shift in perspective proposed by New Materialisms (from dualistic and hierarchical to relational and egalitarian) with the literature on product sustainability as well as anthropological studies of craft. Through this theoretical framework, Acerbis explores kitchens and sustainability. By investigating how kitchens actively shape and develop interactions with users, the project frames materiality as a possible catalyst for more sustainable kitchen-human relations.
