Irene Roosevelt Aitken is a prominent collector and patron of the decorative arts, with a long-standing dedication to cultural institutions. She is an honorary trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where her contributions have supported the Departments of Arms and Armor, European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, and the American Wing.

In addition to her support of the Met, Mrs. Aitken has contributed to the growth of numerous institutions, including the Frick Collection, where she is a council member, the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Preservation Society of Newport, and Bard Graduate Center. Her philanthropic work also extends to environmental causes through her support of the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Mrs. Aitken’s private collection includes notable pieces of eighteenthcentury French and English furniture, as well as a remarkable collection of arms and armor—a passion she shared with her late husband, Russell Barnett Aitken.
