Raphaël Machiels has a wide range of interests and hobbies, from researching revolutionary Sèvres porcelain to 1990s minimalist furniture. Before beginning his studies at Bard Graduate Center, he worked in contemporary design in London and studied art history at Leiden University in the Netherlands.
