What is the Object?

This course coincides with the installation and opening of Richard Tuttle: What is the Object? The exhibition is a tool aimed at providing visitors with the opportunity to develop new ways of seeing, encountering, and learning from objects. The course will be an in-depth guide to these ideas and practices. Histories of the object will be more starting point than goal. Students will be pushed to find their own creative vision of how these objects work in the world, and to learn how to electively present them. Weekly exercises in looking will be supplemented by readings in philosophy and literature. What does it mean to be taught to see objects the way an artist sees them ? Students will also work with objects from Tuttle’s collection not included in the exhibition but now part of the BGC Study Collection. The final project in the course will be mounting a small-scale presentation of these objects under Tuttle’s direction. 3 Credits.
