DESCRIPTION:François\nLouis will give a Work-in-Progress talk on Thursday\,
September 20\, at\n12:15 pm. His talk is entitled “Early Liao-Dynasty Rit
ual Objects in Light of\nChinese and Turkic Traditions.”\n\nThe\nnomadic K
 itans formed a “Chinese-style” dynasty in 916—the Liao—but it is open\nto
question to what degree Chinese culture mattered to the new ruling elite.
\nThis work-in-progress talk presents two strands of research on the forma
tive\nstages of the ritual material culture of the Kitan-Liao dynasty. The
first is a\nmostly text-based reconstruction of the Kitan appropriation o
f Chinese ritual\nparaphernalia\, clothing in particular. The second is a
comparative examination\nof Liao archaeological data in light of Turkic fi
nds from Mongolia and Siberia.\nThis may be interpreted as material eviden
 ce for little-documented contacts\nbetween Kitans\, Uighurs\, and Kirghiz.
\n\nFrançois Louis is an Associate Professor at Bard Graduate Center. His
current\nresearch focuses on the art and material culture of the Kitan-Lia
 o dynasty\n(907-1125) in northern China.
