 ay\, November 9\, at\n12:15 pm. His talk is entitled “Ship Shape: Incense 
 Boats across the Early\nModern Globe.”Beginning in the late fifteenth cent
 ury\, the\nspread of European merchants and missionaries in search of new 
 territory was\naccompanied by a tide of Western material culture\, includi
 ng objects and\nimplements associated with Catholic Christianity. Among th
 ese was the incense\nboat or navicula\, typically\ncrafted of silver and m
 odeled on the very ocean-going ships that brought them\nand their first ow
 ners and users to sites across the globe. Housing resins that\nwere themse
 lves both a tool of evangelization and an international\ncommodity\, navic
 ulaeembody\nthe spread of commerce and Christianity and suggest important 
 links between the\ntwo. This study investigates the form’s development and
  dispersal during the\nheyday of exploration and colonization\, when litur
 gical vessels of strikingly\nsimilar conception appeared across vast physi
 cal and cultural distances. At the\nsame time\, case studies of specific e
 xamples from the Americas\, Africa\, and\nAsia suggest how seemingly ubiqu
 itous and globalized objects may nonetheless\nhave carried distinct and sp
 ecific local meanings for the individuals and\ncommunities that made\, use
 d\, or viewed them.\n\nJeffrey L. Collins is a Professor at Bard Graduate 
 Center. His current\nresearch explores the links between archeology\, muse
 ology\, and neoclassicism in\neighteenth-century Italy by following the ch
 anging forms and fortunes of a\ngroup of ancient statuary from its excavat
 ion near Tivoli through installation\nat the new Vatican Museum\, seizure 
 under Napoleon\, and return to Rome after\nWaterloo.
