DESCRIPTION:Ellen Smith will give a Brown Bag\nLunch presentation on Thursd
ay\, March 15\, at 12:15 pm. Her talk is entitled\n“The Limits and Possibi
lities of Jewish Material Culture Studies.”\n\nObjects don’t “talk\,”\nbut
we often rely on them to tell us stories about history and culture.\nWhat
can we actually learn from non-textual material? How can\nwe “read” objec
ts absent supporting textual material? How does supporting\ndocumentary or
oral history evidence shape our interpretations? What can\nmaterial cultu
re tell us about the past and the present that other forms of\nevidence ca
nnot? And what can we learn specifically from Jewish material\nculture abo
ut Jewish communities and the people among whom they live? Join\nProfessor
Smith for a conversation and hands-on experience to explore the\nlimits a
nd possibilities of Jewish material culture studies\, testing the new\nkno
wledge it may provide\, and reconsidering some standard interpretations it
\nmay challenge.\n\nEllen Smith is Associate Professor and Director of the
\nHornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program\, and an affiliated fac
ulty\nmember of the Heller School for Social Policy and Management\, and t
he\nDepartment of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University.
She is\nalso principal of Museumsmith\, where she consults on museum and h
istoric\npreservation projects around the country. Trained as a profession
al historian\nand a museum curator\, Professor Smith has produced over thr
ee dozen books\,\narticles\, and museum exhibitions on American Jewish his
tory and American Jewish\nwomen’s history\; on Yiddish theater and Jewish

ws of Boston\, and was the chief\nconsultant to the Emmy award-winning WGB
H (PBS) television show of the same name.\nAt Brandeis\, she has developed
  and teaches a series of courses in visual and\nmaterial culture\; art\, a
rtifacts and history\; and museum studies. She also\nco-directs advanced t
