DESCRIPTION:Noam Osband will give a Brown Bag\nLunch presentation on Wednes
 day\, January 17\, at 12:15 pm. His talk is entitled\n'Film as Scholarship
 : My Beautiful Anthropological\nDissertation.'Visual anthropology has a lo
 ng and storied\nhistory of using film. In this lecture\, Osband will discu
 ss approaches and\ntrends within the field\, beginning with Margaret Mead 
 in the 1920s and ending\nwith his film dissertation from 2017. Osband will
  describe different ways to\nutilize the unique capacity of film for trans
 mitting academic truths. \n\nNoam Osband is an anthropologist and filmmake
 r. His\nfirst feature\, Adelante\, a documentary about Mexican\nimmigratio
 n to Philadelphia was shown on over twenty PBS affiliates\, played at\nove
 r thirty festivals\, and was screened at over forty colleges. The film won
 \nawards at numerous festivals including the Catskill Mountain Film Fest\,
  the\nAccolade Film Fest\, and the International Festival of Ethnological 
 Films. His\nmost recent film\, The Radical Jew\, won Best Short Documentar
 y Film\nat the Tallgrass and Charlotte Film Fest. Osband recently earned a
  PhD in\nanthropology from the University of Pennsylvania\, where he was t
 he first\nstudent in the school’s long history to submit a documentary fil
 m as a PhD\ndissertation.
