DESCRIPTION:E. Ulrich Leben will give a Brown Bag Lunch presentation on Mon
day\,\nOctober 9\, at 12:15 pm. His talk is entitled “Cabinetmakers of Ger
man Origin in\nEighteenth-Century Paris: A Chapter in European History of
Migration and\nTransfer of Knowledge and Craft in the Age of Enlightenment
.”\n\nThe fact that a large number\nof cabinetmakers working in Paris duri
ng the eighteenth century were of German\norigin is well known. It is ther
efore surprising that there has never been\nresearch on the lives and work
of these more than one hundred craftsmen. \nThis talk will present variou
s aspects of a project currently being undertaken\nby Dr. Ulrich Leben and
Miriam Schefzyk on these craftsmen and provide insight\ninto archive-base
d research in France and abroad exploring questions regarding\nsocial\, ec
onomic\, and cultural circumstances. A major goal of this project is\nthe
publication of a dictionary of these craftsmen that will be a tool for\nfu
rther work in the field.E. Ulrich Leben is an\nindependent art historian b
ased in Paris and Associate Curator for the\nRothschild Collection at Wadd
esdon Manor in Buckinghamshire. He teaches classes\non French and German d

sons\, The New School. From 2010–15 he was Visiting Professor and\nSpecial
Exhibitions Curator at Bard Graduate Center\, where in 2013 he\nco-curate
d the exhibition Salvaging the Past: Georges Hoentschel and French\nDecora
tive Arts from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. After an apprenticeship as
\na cabinetmaker in Germany he studied the History of Art at the École du
Louvre\nin Paris and received his PhD at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelm
Universität\nin Bonn. He is the author of numerous articles and exhibition
