DESCRIPTION:Nobuko Shibayama will give a Brown Bag Lunch presentation on Mo
 nday\, December 7\, 2015. Her talk is entitled “The Analysis of Organic Co
 lorants in Art Objects: Case Studies from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.”
 At Bard Graduate Center\, Shibayama will discuss organic dye analysis perf
 ormed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Department of Scientific Researc
 h. Since the Department of Scientific Research was established in 2004\, i
 t has carried out scientific studies to support curatorial and conservatio
 n work at the Museum. These have included analysis of materials used in ar
 t objects\, investigations into the appropriate environment for art object
 s\, and scientific research into conservation treatments and materials. Or
 ganic dye analysis is one of these activities\, and Shibayama will present
  case studies including a Colonial Latin American tapestry from the sixtee
 nth or seventeenth century\, Safavid and Mughal velvets made between the s
 ixteenth and eighteenth centuries\, and the Gluttony tapestry by Pieter Co
 ecke van Aelst.Nobuko Shibayama is Associate Research Scientist at the Met
 ropolitan Museum of\nArt. She received a PhD in Applied Science for Functi
 onality from the\nPostgraduate School\, Kyoto Institute of Technology\, an
 d a Diploma in Textile\nConservation from the Courtauld Institute of Art. 
 Her work focuses on the use\nof liquid chromatography and mass spectrometr
 y techniques to identify dyes and\norganic lake pigments in art objects.
