DESCRIPTION:Charlotte Gamper will be giving a Brown Bag Lunch\npresentation
  on Wednesday\, November 19\, 2015\, from 12 to 1:30pm\, at the Bard\nGrad
uate Center in New York City. Her talk is entitled “Textile Conservation a
 t\nHistoric Royal Palaces: A 100-Year History.”\n\nCharlotte Gamper became
a member of the textile\nconservation team at Historic Royal Palaces in 2
013 after completing a\nconservation internship in their Conservation and
Collection Care department\,\nfunded by the Clothworkers’ Foundation throu
gh the Institute of Conservation\ninternship program. Gamper received her
MPhil in Textile Conservation\nfrom the University of Glasgow and has comp
leted work placements at the British\nMuseum and Scottish Conservation Stu
dio. In 2013 Gamper presented her\ndissertation research on the wet-cleani
ng of historic viscose rayon textiles at\nthe 9th North American Textile C
onservation Conference (NATCC). In 2015\, at the\n10th NATCC\, she will le
cture on her research into the use of Fosshape®\, a\nnew material being us
ed for conservation mounting. Gamper is also\nworking with Heritage Withou
t Borders to deliver a conservation training\nworkshop at the Gjirokastër
Ethnographic Museum in Albania. \n\nAt Bard Graduate Center\, Gamper will
examine the\nrich history of the textile conservation studio at Historic R
oyal Palaces. In\n1912\, a public outcry on the sorry state of the monarch
’s tapestries led to the\nestablishment of a tapestry restoration studio a
t Hampton Court. In the ensuing\n103 years\, approaches to the care of the
diverse historic royal textile\ncollections have evolved from a craft-bas
ed practice reliant solely on manual\nskills to our current\, multidiscipl
inary approach that combines technical\nskills and ethical considerations
with academic knowledge and scientific\ninvestigation. Gamper will also di
scuss the lab’s changing role from\na behind-the-scenes department to one
at the forefront of audience engagement.\nHer talk will demonstrate that c
onservation is not a static field\, but one that\nis constantly developing
as new scholarship and institutional needs arise.\n\nCoffee and tea will
be served\; attendees are welcome to\nbring their own lunch.RSVP is requir
 ed.
