  Grier is Professor of History and\nDirector of the Ph.D. Program in Ameri
 can Civilization and the Museum Studies\nProgram at the University of Dela
 ware. A graduate of Princeton University (B.A.\n1975)\, the Cooperstown Gr
 aduate Program in Historical Museum Studies (M.A.\n1980)\, and the Univers
 ity of Delaware (Ph.D. American Civilization\, History\,\n1988)\, Professo
 r Grier is a specialist in material culture studies whose\nresearch intere
 sts lie in the history of everyday life in the United States\,\nespecially
  household routines\, domestic interiors\, and foodways. Her\nbook\, Pets 
 in America: A History (University of North Carolina Press\,\n2006) grew ou
 t of her interest in the history of animal-human interaction. Her\ncurrent
  research interests in this field include the development of the pet\nfood
  industry\, the lives of animals in American cities\, and selective breedi
 ng\nof small animals for ornamental purposes. She is also the author of Cu
 lture\nand Comfort: Parlor Making and Middle-Class Identity\, 1850-1930 (R
 ochester\,\nN.Y.: Strong Museum\, 1988)\, and former Executive Editor of W
 interthur\nPortfolio.
