Transfer Printed Earthenware (East Hagbourne: Friends of Blue\, 1998)\, a
nd Wedgwood Jasperware (Oxford: Shire\, 2011).This talk will examine the w
ay in which the Wedgwood Company\nreacted to the changing tastes in Victor
ian Britain. Under the guidance\nof Francis and Godfrey Wedgwood\, the co
mpany endeavoured to regain its former\nprestige against a background of i
ncreasing competition from other Staffordshire\nmanufacturers. The Wedgwo
od management carefully observed their\ncompetitors best-selling lines and
began to emulate some of their products.\n As Clement Wedgwood took great
er responsibility for production\, his\nexperiments with new glazes became
particularly important\, which led the\nWedgwood Company to embrace the m
anufacture of Majolica from 1860.\n Initially\, the company produced a mod
est selection of pieces covered with\nextravagantly coloured glazes based
on the Victorian love of ornament. \nThey continually developed the range
of products and\, by 1878\, Wedgwood was\namong the leaders of this taste
and fashion.Light refreshments will be served at 5:45 pm. The\npresentatio
n will begin at 6:00 pm.RSVP is required.PLEASE NOTE that our Lecture Hall
