DESCRIPTION:6 pm – reception\n6:30 pm – 7:30 pm – lecture\n\nDrawing from t
heir publication Artist/Rebel/Dandy: Men\nof Fashion (Yale University Pres
s\, 2013)\, Kate Irvin and Laurie Brewer\nwill discuss the sometimes extre
me physical transformations evident in the\ndandy's silhouette. The fashio
n practices of this iconic character will be\nanalyzed through caricatures
dating to the age of Beau Brummel\, the\nquintessential dandy\, and an ex
amination of the artful modification of the male\nbody at the hand of the
tailor. In laying bare the secrets of the dandy\naesthetic\, the authors w
ill present a figure who employed profound imagination\nin his appearance
as he forged a unique path to self-discovery and\nself-expression.Kate Irv
in is curator and head of the Department of Costume and Textiles\nat the M
useum of Art\, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD Museum). Her recent\nex
