DESCRIPTION:Andrew Dolkart will lead a tour will explore the surviving 19th
 -century\narchitecture of lower Manhattan focusing on sites featured in th
 e BGC\nFocus Gallery exhibition\, Visualizing 19th-Century New York. We be
 gin\nat the former Merchants' Exchange\, a symbol of the city's commercial
  wealth\,\nand then continue along Wall Street\, past the original U.S. Cu
 stom House\, to\nTrinity Church\, the most prominent building on the 19th-
 century urban skyline. Walking\nalong Broadway\, we will discover the comm
 ercial\, institutional\, and civic\ndesign that set the stage for the deve
 lopment of New York as the great\nmetropolis of the United States\, and co
 nclude with the grand retail emporiums\nin what is now Tribeca.\n\nAndrew 
 Dolkart is Director and Professor of the\nHistoric Preservation Program fo
 r the Graduate School of Architecture\, Planning\nand Preservation at Colu
 mbia University. He is well-known for his architectural\nwalking tours of 
 New York.
