DESCRIPTION:6 pm reception\n6:30 pm lecture\n\nBetween AD 600 and 1000\, th
e Wari people of ancient Peru\nforged a society so complex that many regar
d it as South America’s first\nempire. Because the Wari did not use writin
g\, our understanding of their\naccomplishments is based on analyses of th
eir material culture\, including a\ncorpus of artistically complex tapestr
y-woven tunics that were the raiment of\nWari rulers and other elites. In
this lecture\, Susan Bergh will examine two\ngroups of tunics to reveal wh
at they suggest about the singular nature of Wari\nrulership. The program
will conclude with a response from exhibition curator\nNicola Sharratt.\n
\nSusan Bergh is curator of Pre-Columbian and Native\nNorth American Art a
t the Cleveland Museum of Art. She organized the recent\nexhibition Wari:
Lords of the Ancient Andes.Nicola Sharratt\, curator of the exhibition Car
rying Coca:\n1500 Years of Andean Chuspas\, is an archaeologist and BGC-AM
 NH postdoctoral\nfellow in museum anthropology.
