This study day explores the history and artistry of costume
design in New York City with a special focus on millinery and costume for the
opera. Barbara Cohen-Stratyner will present a lecture on early 20th-century
costume and fashion design as a model for Broadway, opera, and dance today. We
will then visit The Metropolitan Opera costume shop for a rare tour with
specialists Lesley Weston, Janet Linville, and Tom Watson. Lunch and cab
fare will be provided.
Barbara Cohen-Stratyner is the curator of collections
at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
Lesley Weston is head of the costume shop, Janet
Linville is head milliner, and Tom Watson is the wig and makeup artist at The Metropolitan
Opera.
