Portugal: From the Caribbean to China.” Following the death\nof Teodosio\,
the 5th duke of Braganza\, in 1563\, an inventory of the\ncontents of his
most important palace\, in Vila Viçosa was made. In over 600\npages and a
bout 6300 entries\, the complete contents of the duke’s and his\nfamily’s
possessions is listed\, from his clothes\, furniture and tapestries\, to\n
the buttons in his shirts and his pots and pans. A collective research pro
ject\nwas put together to analyze various aspects of this incredibly rich
document\,\nthe largest surviving 16th-century Portuguese inventory and an
extraordinary\nsource of information of all kinds. This paper references
several theoretical\nand methodological issues the research group had to f
ace and solve\, and\npresents a statistical and critical summary of the in
ventory’s contents\,\nfocusing especially on the entries that relate to th
e Portuguese empire. These\ninclude objects whose origins span from China
to the Caribbean\, as well as\nmaps\, books and a number of scientific ins
truments that provide us information\nabout the empire. Finally\, this pap
er analyzes the nature of the duke’s\n“imperial” belongings and their plac
ement inside his palace in light of the\nidea of the wünderkammer\, which
was emerging at the time. Please RSVP and join us in the Lecture Hall at 38
West 86th\nStreet\, between Columbus Ave and Central Park West\, at 5:45p
 m for a reception\nbefore the talk.
