DESCRIPTION:Meredith Martin will come to speak in the Françoise and\nGeorge
 s Selz Lectures on 18th- and 19th-Century French Decorative Arts and\nCult
 ure on Wednesday\, November 18\,  2009\, on: “Tipu Sultan’s Mission to\nVe
 rsailles: Indomania and Anglomania in Pre-Revolutionary Paris.”\n\nDr. Mar
 tin is currently Assistant Professor of 18th- and\n19th-Century European A
 rt at Wellesley College\, where she has taught since\n2008. She received h
 er B.A. from Princeton and her Ph.D. from Harvard\nUniversity. She was a l
 ecturer and Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at\nColumbia University f
 rom 2006-2007. In 2004 she held the position of adjunct\ninstructor at the
  Fashion Institute of Technology and from 2003-2005\, she was a\ngraduate 
 instructor at Harvard University. In addition to the Mellon\nFellowship\, 
 Professor Martin has received awards and honors including the\nChester Dal
 e Fellowship from the Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts\nin 2
 005-2006\, a Samuel H. Kress Foundation Travel Fellowship in 2005\, a Harv
 ard\nUniversity Certificate of Excellence in Teaching in the Spring and Fa
 ll of\n2002\, and the Rensselaer Lee Senior Thesis Prize from Princeton Un
 iversity in\n1997.\n\nDr. Martin has published several articles including:
 \n“Interiors and Interiority in the Ornamental Dairy Tradition” (Eighteent
 h-Century\nFiction 20\, n. 3 (Spring 2008))\; “Gilty Pleasures: Meredith M
 artin on the\nRococo” (Artforum\, Summer 2008)\;Period Eye: Karen Kilimnik
 ’s Fancy Pictures [with\nScott Rothkopf]\, Serpentine Gallery/Koenig Books
 \, 2007)\; and “Dairy\nQueens: Pleasure Dairies from Catherine de Médicis 
 to Marie-Antoinette” (Center\n26: Record of Activities and Research Report
 s\, June 2005-May 2006\, (CASVA\,\n2006)). Her book Dairy Queens: Pastoral
  Architectural and Political\nTheater from Catherine de’ Medici to Marie-A
 ntoinette is forthcoming from\nHarvard University Press\, and an anthology
  entitled Architectural Space in\nEighteenth-Century Europe: Constructing 
 Identities and Interiors\, co-edited\nwith Denise Baxter\, is forthcoming 
 from Ashgate in 2010.\n\nProfessor Martin will give a talk entitled “Tipu 
 Sultan’s\nMission to Versailles: Indomania and Anglomania in Pre-Revolutio
 nary Paris.” In\n1788 Tipu Sultan\, the ruler of Mysore in South India\, s
 ent a diplomatic mission\nto Versailles to meet with King Louis XVI. Tipu 
 hoped to persuade the French to\nhelp him fight the British\, who were con
 solidating their power in India.\nAlthough Louis XVI turned Tipu down\, th
 e French crown did try to strengthen\ncommercial ties with Mysore\, especi
 ally in the areas of textiles and luxury\ngoods. This talk examines gifts 
 exchanged between France and Mysore and images\nmade of Tipu’s ambassadors
  during their three-month stay in Paris.\n\nPlease join us in the Lecture
