 ule Them All? Investigating Religious and Political\nLandscapes in Pre-mod
 ern South India through Archaeology\, Inscriptions\, and\nMaps.'\nIn this 
 talk\, Suvrathan will discuss the results\nof an archaeological research p
 roject that investigated long-term history in a\nregional capital located 
 on the periphery of larger\, often ephemeral\, states\nand empires in anci
 ent South India. She will examine a variety of data\n(material culture\, i
 nscriptions\, and historical maps) to highlight the fluidity\nof elite pol
 itical and religious strategies\, and reconstruct the nature and\ndistribu
 tion of regional administrative and religious centers in south central\nIn
 dia (the modern state of Karnataka).\n\nUthara Suvrathan is\na Visiting Fe
 llow at Bard Graduate Center\, where she is completing her book\nmanuscrip
 t Persistent Peripheries: Archaeological and Historical\nLandscapes of an 
 Early City in South India\, 3rd c. BCE–18th c. CE. Her\nresearch draws on 
 both archaeological and textual material to examine the\norganization of p
 olities and places on the margins of large socio-political\nsystems and em
 pires in South Asia. She is also involved in collaborative\nprojects aimed
  at preserving the archaeological heritage in South India and the\nsharing
  of archaeological data between scholars working in the region. Working\nw
 ith colleagues in India and the United States\, these projects involve the
 \ndocumentation and preservation of previously un-recorded historic inscri
 ptions\,\nas well as the creation of a shareable database recording archae
 ological site\ninformation collected by scholars working across South Asia
 . Her publications\ninclude “Spoiled for Choice? The Sacred Landscapes of 
 Ancient and Early\nMedieval Banavasi” in South Asian Studies (Vol. 30.2\, 
 2014)\nand “Regional Centres and Local Elite: Studying Peripheral Cores in
  Peninsular\nIndia” in Indian History (The Annual Journal of the Archive\n
 India Institute\, Vol. 1\, 2014). She received her PhD from the University
  of\nMichigan.
