DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Michael Square will give a Brown Bag Lunch presentatio
 n on Tuesday\, May 11\, at 12:15 pm. His talk is entitled “A Stain on an A
 ll-American Brand: How Brooks Brothers Once Clothed Enslaved People.'Squar
 e will present his research on Brooks Brothers' connections to slavery. Br
 ooks Brothers was founded in 1818 and\, in the first few decades of its op
 eration\, provided merchandise to elite gentlemen as well as livery for th
 eir domestics. Some of those domestics were enslaved people. In this talk\
 , Square will use two Brooks Brothers coats worn by enslaved men as a poin
 t of departure to explore the history of this 'heritage' brand.Jonathan Mi
 chael Square is a writer\, historian\, and curator specializing in fashion
  and visual culture of the African Diaspora. He has a PhD in history from 
 New York University\, a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Au
 stin\, and a BA from Cornell University. He has taught at the University o
 f Pennsylvania\, Fashion Institute of Technology\, Parsons School of Desig
 n\, and currently at Harvard University. He has written for Fashionista\, 
 Fashion Studies Journal\, Refinery29\, Vestoj\, Hyperallergic\, British Ar
 t Studies\, and International Journal of Fashion Studies. A proponent of t
 he power of social media as a platform for radical pedagogy\, he founded a
 nd runs the digital humanities project Fashioning the Self in Slavery and 
 Freedom\, which explores the intersection of fashion and slavery.This even
 t will be held via Zoom. A link will be circulated to registrants by 10 am
