DESCRIPTION:Soon Kai Poh will give a Brown Bag Lunch presentation on Monday
\, November 11\, at 12:15 pm.\nHis talk is entitled “Conservation as a Hum
an Science at BGC.”\n\nFor many years\, the practice of conservation\nhas
been tacitly accepted in the life of objects. In recent decades\, the work
\nof conservators and conservation as a professional field has drawn incre
asing\nattention from both individuals and institutions who interrogate th
e object\,\nalthough there has been less critical scrutiny from broader hu
manist\nperspectives. The Cultures of Conservation and Conserving Active M
atter initiatives\nat Bard Graduate Center have explored these ideas over
the last seven years\,\nand continue to do so\, culminating in an exhibiti
on slated for Spring 2022. The\nexhibition aims to provide a refreshing ta
ke on what it means to display\nconservation and its associated activities
through its conception as a human\nscience. In this talk\, Soon Kai Poh w
ill describe how an early\ncareer objects conservator can benefit from the
wide-ranging intellectual life\nat Bard Graduate Center\, as an experimen
tal proof-of-concept of conservation as\na human science. Drawing from thi
s research\, the talk will also briefly discuss\nthe ongoing development o
f the exhibition\, informally introducing it to the\nBard Graduate Center
community.Soon Kai Poh is a\nrecent graduate of the dual MA/MS program in
the History of Art and the\nConservation of Historic and Artistic Works at
the Conservation Center\,\nInstitute of Fine Arts\, New York University\,
specializing in objects\nconservation with a particular interest in Asian
and Near-Eastern works of art.\nHe has completed internships and worked o
n projects in the conservation labs of\nthe Freer Gallery of Art and Arthu
r M. Sackler Gallery\, the Peabody Essex\nMuseum\, the Metropolitan Museum
of Art\, the Elmer Holmes Bobst Library\, and the\nPhiladelphia Museum of
Art. As part of his graduate training\, he worked on-site\nat New York Un
iversity’s Excavations at Aphrodisias in Turkey\, and participated\nin mul
tiple conservation projects at Villa La Pietra\, New York University’s\nac
 ademic center in Florence\, Italy.
