Exhibition-Related Programs

The Department of Exhibition-Related Education presents an array of offerings to complement the exhibition English Embroidery from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1580-1700: 'Twixt Art and Nature, featuring renowned scholars, artists, designers, and other specialists in the decorative arts, design, and culture.

Teachers, school administrators, and parents are invited to meet colleagues and enjoy a private tour of the exhibitions Dutch New York Between East and West: The World of Margrieta van Varick and Dress Code: Attire and Architecture in Island Southeast Asia.

Participants receive priority scheduling for school tours. Light refreshments will be served.

Open House for Seniors

Join us for exhibition viewing, special guided tours, and refreshments.

Admission is free for seniors (age 65 and older).

Advance registration is required, and capacity is limited. Tours, limited to 25 people, will be given every half hour beginning at 11:00 a.m. Please indicate your desired tour time when registering.

Community Festival
Sunday, November 1, 2009
Discover the maritime and trade culture of early New York City as revealed in a collection of intriguing objects like those purchased and sold by Flatbush shopkeeper Margrieta van Varick. See the premiere performance of a new shadow puppet play about the adventures of Margrieta, a Dutch merchant, created by master puppeteer Caroline Borderies. Make your own shadow puppet inspired by one of the treasures you find as you navigate the exhibition with a tour guide.

Family Day
Saturday, December 5, 2009
Thriving merchant and shipping fleets made the Dutch prosperous, exposing them to goods from around the world and spreading their influence to distant lands. On Family Day, explore the culture and craft of the Dutch Golden Age on a tour of the exhibition Dutch New York Between East and West: The World of Margrieta van Varick with BGC educator Stephanie Stern. Then enjoy activities including map-making, designing pottery, and a scavenger hunt.
