Discover the maritime and trade culture of early New York City as revealed in a collection of intriguing objects like those purchased and sold by Flatbush shopkeeper Margrieta van Varick. See the premiere performance of a new shadow puppet play about the adventures of Margrieta, a Dutch merchant, created by master puppeteer Caroline Borderies. Make your own shadow puppet inspired by one of the treasures you find as you navigate the exhibition with a tour guide.

Family Day

Thriving merchant and shipping fleets made the Dutch prosperous, exposing them to goods from around the world and spreading their influence to distant lands. On Family Day, explore the culture and craft of the Dutch Golden Age on a tour of the exhibition Dutch New York Between East and West: The World of Margrieta van Varick with BGC educator Stephanie Stern. Then enjoy activities including map-making, designing pottery, and a scavenger hunt.
