This is a survey of Western urban fashion from the rise of mercantile capitalism in the 14th century through the revolutionary designs of Paul Poiret. As an expression of society’s self-image, tastes, and fantasies, fashionable dress offers a rich area for study in its sources of inspiration, and in the factors that impact its evolution: social, economic and political. 3 credits.
