The arts of the book are central to the cultures of the Islamic world. This course will introduce the history and status of the arts of the book, including manuscript production, the role of calligraphy, illumination, illustration, and binding, as well as manuscript patronage from the origins of Islam in the 7th century to early modern times and within a variety of traditional Muslim cultures (Arab, Persian, Turkish, Indian). Several class sessions will involve firsthand examination of Islamic manuscripts belonging to collections in New York City and the surrounding area. 3 credits.
