This course is an examination of the historical evidence of Silk Road trade in texts, images, and surviving examples. The iconographic and symbolic design elements of these textiles will be studied, as well as their technological aspects and intended purposes, using interpretive approaches in material culture and history set out by Jules Prown, Alfred Gell, and Thomas Allsen. Also included are recent archaeological finds along the transverse Asian trade roads that enrich and expand our understanding of the production of luxury commodities. 3 credits.
