Object Exhibition and Display

The course is intended as a practical introduction to decorative arts exhibitions. As students discuss different theoretical, philosophical, and psychological approaches to exhibition practice and viewer experience, they visit and learn to critique current displays at a variety of New York institutions. Points of focus are concept, interpretation, object selection, and effectiveness of the installation. Students develop their own exhibition ideas by creating a script, an object checklist, a catalogue contents page, and sample object entries. Budgets, conservation requirements, loan procedures, and public programming are related requirements of exhibition preparation that students learn to consider. 3 credits.
