This course is an orientation to contemporary museum organization and administration. Students learn about authority, responsibility, and ethics within today’s museums. Areas of examination include the roles of boards of trustees, management, development, public relations, education, collections management, security, and other functions. Students also become familiar with basic issues of object care, including handling, storage, accessioning, conservation, registration, cataloguing, the preparation of condition reports, and other responsibilities. Visits to New York metropolitan area institutions and interviews with museum professionals are arranged. 3 credits.
