This is a survey of the history of glassmaking methods, production, and design, with discussions of the major techniques and designers. After a brief introduction to glass of the ancient world, the course emphasizes the glass traditions of Italy, France, England, and Germany, tracing their development through the current era. The impact of mechanized production and the innovative techniques that have emerged in the last two centuries, as well as the issue of artist/artisan production in the 20th century, are discussed. Slide-illustrated lectures are combined with visits to museums, galleries, and a glassmaking studio. 3 credits.
