This course examines the Aesthetic movement in relation to a broad range of decorative arts—interiors, furniture and furnishings, fashion, theater, and exhibition design. The theoretical and philosophical debates about style, design, and dress reform are also studied through the writings of key 19th-century authors. Themes addressed include the role of the new art press and galleries, art manufacturers and retailers, the literature of household taste, artists and collectors as leaders of taste, orientalism and national identity, gender relations, and the expression of modernity. 3 credits.
