using vmr equipment

Copystand
There is a copystand with lights available in the Visual Media Resources department on the third floor of 38 West 86th Street. Faculty, students, alumni, and researchers using the library are welcome to make use of the copystand with their own cameras anytime the building is open. To ensure that the copystand is available, it is suggested that you sign up on the Copystand Sign-up Sheet next to the copystand. Download instructions for using the copystand with a 35mm camera here.

Scanners
There are two flatbed scanners available for faculty and student use only in the VMR department and in the Library Alcove on the third floor. There is also a slide scanner available in the VMR department workstation. To ensure that a scanning workstation is available, it is suggested that you sign up on the Scanning Station Sign-up Sheet beside each workstation. Sessions are limited to 4 hours at a time. If you experience any problems with the scanner or workstation, please send an email to: StudentTechSupport@bgc.bard.edu.

Cameras
35mm SLR and digital cameras are available for student and faculty use with the copystand during regular staff hours (9 to 5, Monday through Friday). When you sign up to use the copystand, please make a note of whether or not you would like to borrow a camera. When you come in, a VMR staff member will assist you in getting set up.

There is also a digital camera available for student and faculty use outside of the building. To reserve this camera, please contact a VMR staff member and schedule a time to use it.

Purchasing Film and Equipment

  • For purchasing cameras and film, we recommend B&H Photo at 420 Ninth Avenue, between 33rd & 34th street.
  • When using the copystand, Fuji or Kodak 64T film must be purchased.
  • BGC students should be able to receive substantial academic discounts on any software when shopping at a university bookstore with a valid student ID. It is, however, a good idea to call ahead and make sure that the software is in stock and that the discount is available. One good bet is the NYU Computer Store, located at 242 Greene Street at Washington Place, 212.998.4672, email: computer.store@nyu.edu.
  • Discounted software may also be purchased from websites, such as http://www.academicsuperstore.com/. To receive discounts through online shopping, students must verify their eligibility according to the terms of the website.
  • For more information about purchasing equipment and software, you may download our Equipment and Software Recommendations, or contact a Visual Media Resources staff member.
