Using RARE books & BGC theses in The Bard Graduate Center
Library
Books in the RARE collection are separated from the general library
stacks because of their rarity and/or fragility. BGC theses are included
in the RARE collection.
Procedures for requesting & using RARE materials
· Print out the DECOPAC record, add your name, and give the printout
to a library staff member.
(If the book cannot be retrieved immediately the staff member will schedule
another, mutually agreeable, time to consult the book.)
· While waiting for the book, wash your hands and clear a reading
space in the 3rd floor alcove. Remove unnecessary books, pens, water
bottles, etc.
(Computers may be used to take notes.)
· Notify the library staff if a RARE item needs conservation.
· Return all RARE items to a library staff member when you are
finished and before the library office closes for the day.
· Do not remove RARE material from the 3rd floor.
Photocopying or photographing items in the RARE collection may be
done only with the specific approval of the Librarian.
· Approval will depend on the book’s condition and the
librarian’s confidence that the item will not be damaged or compromised
by such duplication.
· BGC theses may not be photocopied or photographed with out
the permission of the author.
Guidelines for using RARE materials
When handling books:
· Use only pencils.
· Open the book gently. If the binding is tight request a book
cradle or weights.
· If it is necessary to mark your place in a RARE book use the
paper slips provided, not post-its, pencils, paper clips, etc.
· Use RARE items on a solid, flat surface; do not hold them in
your lap.
· Do not lay notebooks, papers or other objects on top of a RARE
item.
Avoid using your elbow to keep a book open.
· Turn pages by lifting the top outer corner then lightly slipping
your fingertips down the fore-edge, supporting the page. Do not attempt
to turn a page while holding something else, especially a writing implement.
· If the book has unopened pages return it to the librarian for
opening.
(Do not attempt this procedure yourself.)
When handling photographs or prints:
· Touch only the edges of photo prints, never the image itself.
· Always use two hands when viewing, supporting both sides of
the print.
· Use gloves when handling negatives, transparencies, or any
unprotected pictorial material.
· Do not flex images.
