BGC annually offers Research and Travel funds to support the scholarship and research of BGC students and alums.

This year, for the first time, we will have two application periods, two deadlines, and two award periods. The first deadline, for all fall and early winter travel and research, will be October 19, 2007. The second deadline, for travel requests for spring and summer requests, will be January 24, 2008.

If you are applying for money for an event/activity for fall or winter, use the October deadline. If your travel hopes are for spring or summer, 2008, use the January deadline. ONLY APPLICATIONS FOR FALL AND WINTER WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR THE FIRST MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. Keep in mind, as well, that your application must be on time. There will need to be a much shorter time for consideration if this is to be done twice a year, and if you miss the deadline, your application cannot be added for late consideration. Retroactive requests for grants will not be considered. That is, you cannot apply in March for money for a conference you gave a paper at in November.

The grants come from several sources. One is an Alumni Travel and Research Fund. All current students in good academic standing, thesis, dissertation students, and alums of the M.A. program are eligible to apply for, and be considered for, grants from this fund. The fund is designated mainly for travel to conferences and for thesis/dissertation research; students; aimed at students who are presenting a paper at a conference. Students applying for dissertation research grants must have an approved dissertation topic. M.A. students applying for thesis research grants must either have an approved topic, or have a topic pending approval.

In addition to this fund, students are eligible for consideration for grants from the Eugenie Prendergast Fund, established to support travel associated with writing the master’s thesis and the doctoral dissertation. Thesis students and dissertation students may apply. All doctoral students must have an approved dissertation topic in order to be eligible. M.A. students must have an approved thesis topic, or have a topic pending approval.
